Member Spotlight

Featured: Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), a civil rights icon and long-serving legislator, was a defining figure in the fight for racial justice in America. Born in 1940 in Troy, Alabama, Lewis became a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and was a key organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. He famously led the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma on “Bloody Sunday,” enduring brutal violence while advocating for voting rights. Elected to Congress in 1986, Lewis represented Georgia’s 5th District for over three decades, championing civil rights, social justice, and human rights. Known for his moral courage, unwavering commitment to nonviolence, and dedication to bipartisanship, Lewis left a lasting legacy as both a lawmaker and a symbol of the ongoing struggle for equality in the United States. He would pass away on July 17, 2020, at the age of 80 after a battle with stage four pancreatic cancer.
